Oxygen treatment

We are delighted to announce that our full Oxygen Therapy service has restarted at the Berkshire MS Therapy Centre.

At this time, appointments will only be available for people with MS. If you are looking for oxygen treatment to help with other conditions please visit https://www.msntc.org.uk. On the website, you will be able to find the contact information of other Centres that may be able to help.

It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of the rules and stay up-to-date with any developments.

  • Whilst we have made every effort to make the Centre as safe as possible, clearly, a risk remains to everyone attending, members, volunteers and staff alike. We urge that you carefully weigh up your personal risk of attending oxygen therapy, particularly those in the high-risk categories, against the benefits you expect to receive from this treatment. If you feel unsure if this therapy provides a benefit to you, we ask that you delay restarting this treatment until the current situation improves.

  • Our staff, volunteers and therapists will regularly test themselves for Covid-19 using workplace lateral flow tests.  The tests are now widely available to the general public, we would encourage people to consider testing themselves before attending the Centre to protect others.  Information for ordering tests can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests.

  • You should be able to attend your session at the right time and leave the Centre as soon as your session has finished, the reception and refreshment area will remain closed to members.

  • You will not be permitted into the building without an appointment.

  • You will always need to wear a face-covering whilst at the Centre, including the car park area, this can be your oxygen mask.
  • Ideally you can fit your own mask and attach/detach the relevant hoses, or with assistance from your partner/carer, limited assistance from our oxygen operators will be available.
  • You will need to follow all instructions from our team and signage such as hand washing/sanitising, social distancing etc.
  • If you use a walking aid, you must bring your own equipment and be able to transfer yourself in and out of your vehicle.  You may transfer from your car to one of our oxygen chamber wheelchairs.  You can bring a partner/carer with you to help with transfers, but they will need to remain in your vehicle or in the garden area whilst you have your treatment.  Our physiotherapy team will be able to provide assistance for safe transfers, but please make sure you allow sufficient time so you can be inside the chamber and ready to go at the scheduled start time.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your treatment start time and wait outside the entrance to the oxygen therapy room, which is to the left- hand side of the building. We ask that you arrive on time.  If you are late, we may not be able to provide your appointment.

  • A member of staff will conduct a verbal risk assessment and temperature check before you are invited into the building.

  • Please bring your own plastic bottle of still water should you need it during the session, remember to loosen the top before we start pressurisation.

  • Please leave whatever personal belongings you can in your car, you can bring in ONE of the following: book/newspaper/tablet/mobile/laptop. You should also make sure you have any emergency medication you may need with you, such as an epi-pen or dextrose, and leave everything else behind, so no coats or bags please.

  • We will unfortunately not be able to provide you with blankets, headphones, magazines etc.

  • Please try to always keep your oxygen mask on whilst inside the chamber, you may temporarily remove it to sip water to help equalise ear pressure, use a tissue etc if necessary, but not for a chat!

  • If you are new to pressurized oxygen therapy, please let the operator know so we can talk you through what to expect.

  • The Centre reserves the right to decline treatment if your risks are deemed high.

  • We may need to cancel appointments at short notice due to circumstances beyond our control, we ask for your patience and understanding should this situation occur.

Please read the information on this page before attending your appointment: https://www.bmstc.org/what-you-need-know-about-appointments-centre

  • Maximum of 1 session per person per week

  • Maximum 6 people inside the chamber, plus 1 surface pressure space available outside the chamber

  • For the first week, we will only offer 16.5’ so people can adjust to being in a pressurized environment, we will then reinstate the previous pressure of 16.5’, 24’ or 33’.

  • Sessions will run at 10 am, 11.30 am and 1.30 pm Monday to Thursday, 10 am and 11.30 am Friday. Saturday morning and Tuesday evening appointments will have restricted access.
