Yoga is an ancient discipline bringing together physical, mental and spiritual practices. It is designed to relax your mind and strengthen your body.
Yoga is widely recommended for people with MS and is included in the NICE guidelines. It combines movement, strengthening work and stretching. It works on the entire body.
All our classes are designed with the challenges of MS in mind and we have two chair-based classes as well as our usual class that involves standing and floor work.
Our usual Yoga class
This class is based on the Yoga sessions that the Berkshire MS Therapy Centre has offered for over twenty years but now it is online.
Everyone is invited to do as much as they feel is comfortable for them and the class can be adapted to meet people’s individual needs. The class normally begins with about 20 minutes of seated movements which can be done either on a chair or sitting on the floor. We then move to standing for about 15-20 minutes and then the rest of the class takes place on the floor. Some movements are seated and some of the postures are done lying on the floor. Yoga encourages us to become more aware of the body and breath and the class ends with a 10 minute relaxation.
Chair-based Yoga class
Chair-based Yoga provides many of the benefits of Yoga but it is practised sitting on a chair throughout the class.
The main criteria for attending the Chair-based Yoga class is to be able to safely sit upright on a chair of your choosing and be able to move. We will use physical movement and gentle stretching, practised with awareness, to release tension and encourage relaxation. We mobilise some of the joints of the body and there is some strengthening work but we remain seated on our chair throughout. Yoga encourages us to become more aware of the body and the breath and the class ends with a short seated relaxation.

Our regular Yoga class takes place on a Wednesday between 11.30 am and 12.45.
The chair-based class will take place on a Monday and Friday between 11.30 and 12.15.
Before starting the class you will need an introductory discussion with Uddhava so he can understand your needs. He will contact you to do this.
About this class
The class is guided by our yoga teacher, Uddhava. He has been running Yoga classes at the Centre for over 20 years.
What do I need to join?
Don't worry joining the session is really simple and you do not need special equipment.
All you need is a smartphone or computer with:
- a microphone
- a camera
You will also need a chair.
We will try to offer some support to help you get set up.
