Yoga is an ancient discipline bringing together physical, mental and spiritual practices. It is designed to exercise and strengthen your body and relax your mind.
Yoga is widely recommended for people with MS and is included in the NICE guidelines. It combines strengthening exercises, physical movement and stretching. It works on the entire body.
All our classes are designed with the challenges of MS in mind and we have three chair-based classes as well as our usual class that involves standing and floor work.
Our usual Yoga class
This class is based on the Yoga sessions that the Berkshire MS Therapy Centre has offered for over twenty years but now it is online.
Everyone is invited to do as much as they feel is comfortable for them and the class can be adapted to meet people’s individual needs. The class normally begins with about 20 minutes of seated movements which can be done either on a chair or sitting on the floor. We then move to standing and work on leg strengthening for about 20 minutes and then the rest of the class takes place on the floor. Some movements are seated and some of the exercises are done lying on the floor. Yoga encourages us to become more aware of the body and breath and the class ends with a 10-minute relaxation.
Chair-based Yoga class
Chair-based Yoga provides many of the benefits of Yoga but it is practised sitting in a chair or wheelchair throughout the class.
45 minutes of seated exercises which aim to strengthen core muscles and the upper part of the body, this is balanced with movement as well as stretching and releasing tension. The class is practised with awareness and ends with a short seated relaxation. The main criteria for attending this class is to be able to safely sit upright on a chair, or wheelchair, and be able to move.
Optional extra session
For those who wish to do additional leg work, there is the opportunity to stay on after the seated class has finished for 20 minutes of leg strengthening, involving standing and using the chair for support.
It is free to attend but any donations will be greatly appreciated: www.bmstc.org/donation
Our regular Yoga class takes place on a Wednesday between 11.30 and 12.45.
The chair-based class will take place on a Monday and Friday between 11.30 and 12.15 and a Tuesday evening class between 6 and 6.45.
Before starting the class you will need an introductory discussion with Uddhava so he can understand your needs. He will contact you to do this.
About this class
The class is guided by our yoga teacher, Uddhava. He has been running Yoga classes at the Centre for over 20 years.
