Constipation Service

If you struggle with constipation you are not alone. It is one of the most hidden, and least spoke about, symptoms of MS and can make other symptoms like spasticity and incontinence worse. Have you tried our new Abdominal FES service to see if we can help?

If you struggle with constipation you are not alone. It is one of the (most) hidden, and least spoke about, symptoms of MS and can make other symptoms like spasticity and incontinence worse.

Last year, with the generous support of the Morrisons Foundation, we started a service, Abdominal FES, that targets constipation. The first people are now finishing their treatments and so far we have had good success.

One those who had success told us:

‘Due to a slow transit caused by MS I have had major issues with my bowels. I was accepted to trial the FES but I really didn’t expect it to work as I’ve tried many things over the years which have caused me other issues. Thankfully I did try it as it has made a huge difference, I use the device every day for 30 minutes which I have fitted into my morning routine quite easily. I still have to help things “move along” with diet and water but that is only a very minor thing. After trialling the unit I have now bought my own. I’m so grateful to the Morrisons Foundation for giving me this opportunity.’

We are now in a position to open it up to more people.

Abdominal FES involves placing electrodes on your stomach for 30 minutes twice a day.

Please note: unfortunately it is not suitable for everyone (e.g. people using catheters among other exclusion criteria). The suitability will be discussed with you.
